Vehicle: 2009 Dodge Avenger SXT w/o Boston System

First off, these speakers bump. Did my research on these and the reviews said that these were better than any comparables by far. I was a little skeptical, but went ahead and spent the 88 for the pair of them. I installed these in my rear deck in my avenger and also installed the supplied crossovers. Very easy install for anyone who can turn a screw and solder a wire. I have no amp and just the factory head unit right now and when I hook up my iPhone 4 to these speakers, they scream. They shake my rear spoiler and shake my package tray above the speakers too! I am very impressed with these speakers. My mom has a 2012 Jeep Wrangler with the premium infinity sound system with the 7 or 8 speakers whatever it has and me just upgrading these two speakers in my car blows her system away easily. The highs are great the mids good as well but the bass is good enough that I won't consider a sub. The factory head unit doesn't deliver the power that these speakers need, the stock speakers are paper and can run off it but these really do need some extra power to really shine. I will be adding an amp or an aftermarket double din head unit soon to help with this but for now these speakers have gone above and beyond what I was hoping for. I wasn't looking to put a sub in my car just wanted some 6x9's that would provide me with really good sound quality and the bass that I wanted. These do all of that.

I listen to lots of rock music along with some pop/rap music. Anything with good bass sounds fantastic with these.

Out of 10 points:
Sound Quality: 8-9 (Only downside is w/factory head unit the louder you go the more distorted it gets)
Value: 9
Looks: 10 (love the spider look but have very dark tint so beware of thieves!)
Overall: 9

  1. I am a professional who has been in the car audio industry for 20+ years now. These are EASILY the best sounding 6x9 speakers I have ever used. The key to having great sound in most speakers is the crossover. Very few speakers you can buy have their own crossover, meaning they operate FULL RANGE all the time. Every possible frequency is going through your speaker wires and into your speakers. The crossover filters out the incorrect frequencies that cause distortion and damage your speaker and corrupt your sound quality.
Someone on here wrote that these speakers are 3-ohm and that high quality speakers are 4-ohm. This is not only incorrect but quite the reverse. Ohms are the measure for resistance. Lower number means less resistance meaning power flows more easily through them which automatically makes them louder than any 4-ohm speaker. Only the serious high quality manufacturers offer speakers less than 4-ohms. Soundstream, PPI, Infinity to name a few.

  2. I received the taruntulas today and so far so good. The speakers look to be quality constructed, and everything was in the box. Nice heavy magnets and the grills look awesome. I will be hooking these up in a few days and i will write a follow up when this happens and one more once the speakers are broken in. Also this magazine article [...].pdfis what led me to this particular set of 6x9's I woulda went with the JBL's next.

  7. I bought these for my 2001 Honda Coupe. The sound is excellent! The install on the other hand was a bit tricky for my car. They say they fit but i had to buy different bolts for them to work. The grill doesn't fit under factory covers, so that makes the bolts go down below the surround cover or padding. After that you can't get a wrench on them to tighten them down. So i had to buy allen head bolts and even then it was a chore. Now if you have plenty of room to work, then this will not be a problem. Even with the extra work I'm very pleased with these speakers. You will not find a better speaker at this price!!!

  8. Conected to my factory boost system in my 2012 Mini Cooper S and the sound in the back is greatly improved. I finally get some nice highs out of the back as well as some pretty deep bass without an added amp.
I did of course do the front rear channel reverse swap on the factory wiring which also made the improvement night and day. Note: this is a quirk in the Mini cars where they block bass to the rears for some reason. I believe this mod applies to all Mini coopers since 2007 with the factory (non HK ) boost system.

  9. OK, I have a Chrysler that came with the Boston premium sound system from the factory. Not enough lows for me and distortion at high volume meant the Bostons had to go. I put a pair of these Tarantula 6x9s in my doors and a pair in the rear deck for rear fill, all hooked to the factory Boston amp and using the supplied crossovers. They fit in my factory locations just fine. I mounted the crossovers in the doors and on the rear deck so they won't rattle, and I got my trunk space back. Turn it up all the way, there is NO distortion. Unless you're a basshead, these provide all the lows you need without a sub. The magnets are large - about 4" in diameter, so make sure you have enough clearance when you install these. And you MUST use an amp to get the max out of them...but once you do, the sound quality is the best I've ever heard from 6x9s. Silky sweet highs. Balanced mids and surprisingly balanced tight lows. You will hear details you've probably never heard before in your music. I did. Easily worth twice what I paid for them. Best 6x9 EVER.
